Asbestos exposure at home can start in the workplace

Working with asbestos is a health hazard. But what workers in South Carolina might not know is that their loved ones at home are also at risk for asbestos exposure. Contaminants and toxins do not necessarily stay contained within a workplace, and many workers inadvertently carry these dangers home with them.

Employees are not doing enough to protect their workers or their workers' loved ones. This is according to researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Boston University School of Public Health. These researchers say that many employers take a precarious approach to creating safe, secure environments in which toxins are carefully contained. Lackluster regulation makes it easier for employers to get away with what they describe as a public health hazard.

Workplace toxins like asbestos usually get carried home on a worker's clothing, thus contaminating his or her house. Researchers did acknowledge that the daily level of contaminants coming into these houses is probably low, but that does not mean family members are safe. These contaminants build up over time, causing health problems and even damaging children's development.

Perhaps one of the most upsetting aspects of this public health hazard is that South Carolina employers should know -- and very likely do -- just how toxic these workplace substances are. They should be doing everything they can to prevent contaminants like asbestos from making their way into workers' homes, but many are simply not. When a family member falls ill from asbestos exposure, successfully pursuing a lawsuit against negligent parties can not only help secure necessary compensation, but can also lead to positive changes at that workplace.
